By Robby Patrick, President and Founder, The Blackburn Foundation. Published . Updated .

Help paying for sober living. The Blackburn Foundation, a Los Angeles 501(c)(3), awards treatment scholarships that can help pay for sober living and transitional housing when a person in recovery cannot afford it. Every scholarship is decided case by case, and scholarships are open to people across the United States. Call (888) 305-5422.

What is sober living?

Sober living, also called a recovery residence, is a substance-free home where people in recovery live together and support each other, often during or after treatment. SAMHSA calls recovery housing a key support strategy in achieving and sustaining recovery. See levels of care, explained for plain definitions of every level of care.

Can a scholarship pay for sober living?

It can. Sober living and transitional housing are on the list of care a Blackburn Foundation scholarship can help pay for. Depending on need, a scholarship can also help pay for:

  • Intervention
  • Detox
  • Residential treatment
  • Intensive outpatient treatment
  • Sober living and transitional housing
  • Therapy and psychiatry
  • Mentoring and spiritual counseling
  • Aftercare

Every scholarship is decided case by case, and submitting an application does not guarantee one.

Who can apply?

  • People living with addiction or co-occurring mental health conditions who are ready to start or continue treatment.
  • People without insurance, or whose coverage has ended before their care is done.
  • Families who have done everything they can and need a partner.
  • Clinicians, interventionists and case managers who have a client ready for care and no way to fund it.

The Foundation is based in Los Angeles, and scholarships are open to people across the United States, not only in Los Angeles.
